The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
